True Brothers
Long before the success of the movie “O Brother Where Art Thou” with it’s
soundtrack of traditional country music, Jacky and Roger True has known that this
genre of music has always had a wide appeal.
They’re a popular country duo who’s doing their part to keep the flame of real
country music burning. They started performing in October of 1990 as True and True.
In June of 1994 they decided to change it to the True Brothers, after all they are indeed
Brothers. Jacky lives in Rockingham county and Roger in Guilford.
One of their heroes was country legend the late Webb Pierce. To honor him they recorded a tribute cd of his songs. His son Webb Jr. presented the brothers with a silver
belt buckle that belonged to his dad for keeping his music alive.
The well known country duo the Wilburn Brothers, Teddy and Doyle was also an
influence on their music. As a matter of fact Jacky and Roger were friends with Teddy up
until his death.
Grand Ol Opry star Charlie Louvin is also a good friend of the True Brothers. In 1996 he invited them to perform at the grand opening of the Louvin Brothers Museum in Bell
Buckle, Tennessee. Charlie and his late brother Ira are in the Country Music Hall of Fame.
They’ve also performed on the Ernest Tubb Record Shop’s Midnite Jamboree in
Nashville and at Loretta Lynn’s dude ranch.
In 1995 Jacky and Roger not only sang but acted in a movie called “The Dam”. The
North Carolina Country Music Association has recognized their talents on several occasions. In 1993, 94 and 95 the NCCMA awarded them the top duo award. They also
Received Airplay International King Eagle award in 2002.
When it comes to songwriting, Jacky, his wife Teresa and Roger are no slouches. On their gospel cd “The Third Man” the original song “There’s A Gate” went to number 24
On the Power Source Magazine chart of Nashville, Tennessee. The magazine is governed by the Christian Country Music Association.
To showcase their songwriting, the True Brothers released “Hymns And Other Songs We Wrote Ourselves” in 2003. Fifteen of the sixteen tracks are original songs. They’ve
released several recordings during their years of performing. One in particular titled “Back To Back”, contains an awesome song called “Flag Draped Coffin”. It pays homage to past presidents Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy. It also pays tribute to
former NFL player the late Pat Tilman who gave up his career to serve his country and
lost his life.
When asked about the current state of country music, Jacky says they’re trying to
Appeal to kids and teenagers and they’ve forgotten about the adults. He also said some of
the girl singers are doing macho type songs which the coal miner’s daughter herself,
Loretta Lynn was doing way back in the 1960’s.
These tar heel natives have definitely made their mark on country music. If you would
